Inaugural Youth Football Skills &
Drills Camp
Presented by the North Shore Youth Athletic Foundation
Turtle Bay Resort Scrimmage Field & Waialua
District Park, July 5-28, 2006
7.31.2006 Turtle
Bay Resort-- Wow camp went by so fast and after 11 days of
conditioning throughout the month of July it came to an end on
Friday July 28 at Turtle Bay Resort's scrimmage field. The weather
was pretty sketchy on this day for all of Oahu except out at Turtle
Bay where rain was light to none however, it was really windy.
Since
it was the last day, I decided to give the kids a little break, we
worked out intensely for an hour instead of the scheduled hour and a
half. Upon completion of the last camp work out all campers were seated and
spoken to about the importance of working hard, never quitting,
education, not getting involved with drugs and always try to keep
themselves positively active. Shortly after, a raffle took place.
There were many prizes up for grabs donated by Oakley Hawaii, Turtle
Bay Golf and 808Golf.com. Six campers were given a prize for having
perfect camp attendance; Dallas Camit, Mana Elmore, Mano Kailikea,
Micah Lunasco, Kobe Lunasco and Corey Cooper, they each received an
Oakley lanyard. Other lucky campers won stickers, hats, bags,
umbrellas, t-shirts, chin straps and Oakley surf posters were given
out to each camper as well. There were also three grand prizes;
Oakley Twitch sunglasses, Oakley/Turtle Bay Golf duffel bag and an AIG Hawaii cooler bag.
After the prizes
were given away, the campers were treated to spaghetti, rice,
buns, juice and some onolicious soft chocolate chip cookies!
The
inaugural camp turned out better than I had ever expected in all
aspects of it. Parents came up to my assistants and myself and gave
it great praise stating they are looking forward to having their
kids participate next year and will also help spread the word too.
To my surprise there were not only youth football kids but also
soccer and others as well and we had a fair amount of young girls
too doing all the youth football skills & drills the boys did. Nobody
was cut any slack, all who participated from age 8 to 14 did so from the
same distances.
I think the kids didn't know what to expect at first but after each
one's first day they soon realized that this camp was not going to
be easy as us coaches were on them constantly to push harder and
when it gets tougher, you got to push even harder. As the weeks went
by the distances increased as well as the intensity. The kids were
constantly told to also train their minds as a strong mind is
equally important as a strong physic which helps them to get through
tough times when they feel like giving up or quitting.
Hustling,
discipline, not sitting down after a drill and other were also
enforced throughout, it was run just like a typical football team
practice. By camp's last week, the kids were covering over
1000 total yards per camp session not including stationary
exercises; sit ups, push ups, drops, etc. They were also sprinting 40 yards and back several
times.
Of the 11 camp days two
were special ones. We were fortunate enough to have highly skilled/professional
coaches, trainers and athletes came out for the kids. The first was
hosted by Chad Ikei of Ikei Fitness Performance who strength
trains and conditions many NFL athletes (click
here for more) and the second was hosted by UH Warrior football
assistant coaches Wes Suan & Mouse Davis (click
here for more) along with help from
Colt Brennan
(2006 UH QB, preseason all-Western Athletic Conference Team),
Gerald Welch (former UH receiver) and Darrick Branch
(former UH receiver).
Through 11 days of
camp the kids looked really good and it was really amazing to see
the
tremendous improvement in each and everyone of them. Their
agility was better, speed faster, foot speed quicker, overall stronger and
the main one, they were all in really good shape/condition! Even
those who didn't know how to do the more complex drills like carioca
& power skipping backwards, they
were doing it by camp's end.
Of course a program like this
can't happen without additional help and support. I was really
fortunate enough to have several solid individuals who helped out on
every camp day and some parents as well and would like to sincerely
thank all of them.
Food for last camp day; Larry & Rachael Lunasco
(spaghetti) and
Liana Galapia
(soft chocolate chip cookies). Matt Hall, President, North Shore
Youth Athletic Foundation (a non profit of the Turtle Bay Resort)
for making it possible to have this camp, for the prizes, water and
general help from Turtle Bay Golf's staff.
In closing I wanted
to thank all the parents and campers who signed up and we look
forward to seeing all of you out next year! Good job as each one of
them never gave up and tried their best all the time. I hope that it
was truly beneficial for your children and I wish them the best of luck
for the upcoming season in what ever sport they play. I am planning
to do this camp again next year in July (2007) and will let you all
know when and where a month or two before the initial start date. I
do want some help for assistant camp coaches from Kahuku side as
well and if you know any who maybe interested have them call me. If
your email address or telephone number changes from now till then
let me know at sean@nsyaf.com or 722-1599.
