Youth Football Skills & Drills Camp

Special Day 1

7.10.2006 Turtle Bay Resort Scrimmage Field, Kahuku, HI-- Chad Ikei of Ikei Fitness Performance (local boy from Kaiser who set 8 power lifting world records) and also trains many NFL players came out to host the first of two special camp days for the campers.

It was a great day at Turtle Bay today; sunny skies, banners flying, bleachers for the parents and a soft green grass field. NFL player Aaron Francisco of the Arizona Cardinals (local boy from Laie who played for Kahuku and BYU) couldn't make it as he had another obligation but other NFL players came out and all the kids got to shake their hands with the most notable being Seth Joyner.

Chad started the day with a little talk making sure the kids understood that they play to win. "How many of you like to lose?" Chad asked the kids. No one raised their hand. How you win is by working hard and never quitting or giving up. He also said that we all know that even if you play to win, you will lose too and it is just as important as you learn to work harder.

Following his talk, the kids went through a warm up session. He then had the kids do some line drills and helped to teach the kids the proper technique for each drill. Then it got really intense. He had some tough drills towards the end for the kids which pushed them to dig deep and persevere, seeing if anyone wanted to give up or quit. Kids huffing and puffing after each 45 second drill which had a little bit of everything and amounted to over 100 yards (shuffling, push ups, side run cross-overs, back pedal, drops with jump and sprinting), "anyone want to give up or quit?" Chad yelled! No one answered, "good" Chad said, that's the mentality you need to have to be successful. When it gets tough or hard you have to push harder!

After the intense drilling, the kids had a water break and Chad took them through one last drill. He had everyone sit with their legs extended and taught all the proper technique to pump their arms for running.

There was one yell and that ended a great day for the kids.
