Youth Football Skills & Drills Camp

Special Day 2

7.15.2006 Turtle Bay Resort Scrimmage Field, Kahuku, HI-- UH coaches Wes Suan and Mouse Davis, players; Colt Brennan (QB, preseason all-Western Athletic Conference Team), Gerald Welch (former UH WR), and former UH Warrior stand out Darrick Branch came out to host the second of two special camp days for the campers.

The day started with a blessing of rain, lots of it as camp got started at 4:00 pm. I was not too happy about the rain thinking it could really ruin this special day for the kids. But then I thought… this is a football camp, the only thing that stops playing football would be lighting or torrential flooding in which both was non-existent. So, the coaches and campers carried on and actually the rain felt good as it’s been so hot lately, helped cool everyone off.

In the falling rain coach Wes Suan introduced the hosts and coach Mouse Davis gave an inspirational speech to the kids and by now everyone was really soaked. After that, it was time for stretching. The kids formed a big circle around Gerald Welch, Colt Brennan and Darrick Branch who led the campers through a series of stretches while coaches Suan & Davis helped out from the sides. About midway through stretching, I noticed something; Mr. Sun was starting to shine. Once he did with full force, it never rained thereafter and turned out to be beautiful day! Once the stretching was over, the kids broke up into groups. All quarterbacks go with Colt, all receivers go with Gerald, all defensive backs go with Darrick and all running backs go with Coach Wes while coach Mouse managed the time. After several minutes in each station, coach Mouse Davis yelled, “Switch!” All campers rotated from the station/coach where they currently were to the next one. This went on until all kids had a chance to visit and learn from all coaches. They learned a little about how to carry the football properly, catch high and low passes, run routes correctly, throw correctly and defend properly.

A water break was taken while camp assistants set up two 15X20 yard fields. The kids were all called up and broken into 4 teams of about 8 per team. The rules were given and the winning team would receive a prize they were told. The first thing each team had to do was come up with a unique team name then it was time to play some two-hand touch football!

Team A played team B while team C played team D. After about a 15 minute game, the teams switched, A played D and C played B. The winning team was the one who had the most points accumulated after two games. The games were intense as it really brought out the competitive spirit in each camper as well as the coaches. Once all the games were completed, coach Mouse Davis called all the kids up and talk to them about how important education was and that it should be as important as playing football.

After coach Davis’ talk, an awards presentation took place, the top team coached by Gerald Welch was awarded a UH visor for each team member. A most valuable player award was also awarded to an outstanding individual on each team, they were picked by each respective team coach. The most valuable players were; Branden Galapia (coach Welch), Skye Akina (coach Branch), Wesley Piena (coach Brennan) and Mano Kailikea (coach Suan).

The last thing for the campers was a personable photo and autograph session with each coach which lasted about 40 minutes and at about 6:50 pm the day ended.
