2nd Youth Skills &
Drills Camp
Presented by the North Shore Youth Athletic Foundation
Waialua District Park & Sunset Beach
Neighborhood Park
June 26- July 27, 2007

2007 North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii—The 2nd
Youth Skills & Drills Camp was a great success once again with a
record number of participant sign ups. 2007’s camp experienced
tremendous growth from that of 2006’s inaugural year with
participants averaging about 60 campers per session, 82 total signed
up (2006 average
campers
per session was about 30, 58 total signed up). Once again kids who
came out to each camp session were treated to sound conditioning and
basic foot speed drills. New coach helpers including Lon Passos
(Radford High School- football assistant coach/baseball coach &
little league baseball coach) came out to help and offered new and
exciting drills for the kids. Weslan Kobayashi (Waialua High
School- assistant wrestling coach & PAL wrestling coach) also shot
in help at each session as well. In 2007 we also adopted the saying,
“GOT SKILLS?” for the camp.
On the
last day of camp, UH Warrior stand-out receiver Ryan Grice-Mullens
(pictured right) took over and helped the kids with different skills
& drills. Mullens also talked to the kids and let them know about
the importance of education and working hard to achieve their goals.
After that he took photos with the kids and signed autographs for
hours. I wanted to extend a special mahalo to Ryan as he stayed till
the end and took precious time out of his busy schedule to touch
each and everyone of the campers in a personal way. The opportunity
to have Ryan come out for the kids was made possible by Oakley
Hawaii and we want to thank them for setting it up. Also on the
last day the kids were treated to pizza, received prizes/posters
(donated by Oakley Hawaii) and ate onolicious soft chocolate chip
cookies made by Liana Galapia (Liana also provided her
onolicious cookies on the last camp day in 2006 as well).
I
wanted to thank all my camp helpers and especially the North
Shore Youth Athletic Foundation (a not for profit of the Turtle
Bay Resort) Mr. Matt Hall, President for making this camp for
the kids on the North Shore possible. It is a good program because
we don’t have anything like it in the country and the benefits are
truly priceless. In 2008 the 3rd Youth Skills & Drills
looks to be even better and we encourage you to have your kids
participate both boys and girls regardless if they play sports or
not. The benefits the kids receive by attending each camp session is
very noticeable after the first several weeks and it is just a good
idea to promote an active life style to them anyway. For you parents
it maybe a good opportunity to put on your walking shoes and while
your child is participating in each camp session you can walk around
the park with friends as well, just an idea. If you are interested
in having your child participate please sign up ASAP as the 3rd
Youth Skills & Drills Camp will be limited to the first 100 campers
who are signed up and paid in full.
Mahalo,
Sean
